About the Audi R8
The Audi R8 is a mid-engine supercar and the most exotic production vehicle in Audi's history. Launched in 2006, the R8 was remarkable for blending genuine supercar performance with the everyday usability and build quality expected of Audi. Its aluminium space frame construction, mid-mounted engine, and quattro all-wheel drive delivered a driving experience that rivalled established Italian supercar makers.
Two generations define the R8: the Type 42 (2007–2015), offered with the 4.2 V8 FSI and the 5.2 V10 FSI shared with the Lamborghini Gallardo; and the Type 4S (2015–2024), which went V10-only, sharing its powertrain with the Lamborghini Huracán and producing up to 620 hp in Performance and GT trim. Both generations were available as a Coupe and Spyder. Production ended in 2024 — parts are increasingly sought-after.

Type 42 (V8 and V10): Ignition coil pack failure on the 4.2 V8 FSI (BUJ) is the most common nuisance fault, causing misfires and limp mode. The vacuum pump on the V8 can leak or seize. The R-tronic automated single-clutch gearbox develops hydraulic actuator wear, causing slow or jerky shifts — many owners convert to the manual as a result. Carbon ceramic brake rotors can develop surface cracking under repeated heavy use. The distinctive Type 42 side blades are vulnerable to stone chips and parking damage.
Type 4S (V10): Carbon build-up on valve seats is documented on the 5.2 FSI V10 — a consequence of direct injection. Magnetic ride adaptive damper seal failures are a known cost: replacement through dealer channels can exceed £2,000 per corner.
