Dual-Clutch Automatic
Dual-clutch technology with two variants: dry-clutch (DQ200, smaller engines, 7-speed) and wet-clutch (DQ250 6-speed, DQ500 7-speed heavy-duty, DL501 7-speed longitudinal, DL382 7-speed B9). The DQ200 is the most commonly replaced unit — the dry clutch pack and mechatronic are well-documented wear items.

ZF Torque Converter Automatic
Traditional torque converter automatics from ZF — extremely robust and smooth. The 8HP (8HP45, 8HP55, 8HP70) is one of the most acclaimed transmissions in the automotive industry and is fitted across the longitudinal Quattro model range from the B9 A4 to the A8 and Q8. The older 6HP preceded it in A6, A7, and A8 from 2004.

Chain-Driven CVT
Audi's continuously variable transmission using a steel push-belt / chain variator. Used in front-wheel-drive longitudinal models — A4 (B6/B7/B8 FWD), A5 FWD, and A6 (C5/C6/C7 FWD). Smooth at steady speeds but sensitive to service interval neglect. Phased out around 2014–2016 in favour of S-tronic dual-clutch.

Manual Gearbox
5-speed and 6-speed manual transmissions — the most affordable and straightforward to replace. The 02Q and MQ500 6-speed units are common in A3 and A4. The B7 A4 2.0 TFSI uses the 02M. The R8 Type 42 features the open-gate Graziano 6-speed manual, which is among the rarest and most sought-after gearboxes in the network.

Mechatronic Unit — Often Cheaper Than a Full DSG
The mechatronic unit is the electrohydraulic control brain of the DSG gearbox. It is the most common point of failure on DQ200 and DQ250 units — symptoms include juddering at low speeds, gear selection hesitation, and fault codes P0826, P17BF, or similar. If the mechanical gearbox internals are sound, replacing the mechatronic alone (£400–£900 from a UK breaker) is significantly cheaper than sourcing a complete DSG assembly (£900–£3,500).
