About the Audi Q5
The Audi Q5 is consistently one of the top-selling Audis in the UK and one of the most requested models across our UK breaker network. Since its 2008 launch on the MLB platform, the Q5 has occupied the sweet spot between the compact Q3 and the full-size Q7, offering standard quattro all-wheel drive, a premium interior, and a broad engine range covering efficient 2.0-litre four-cylinders through to the high-performance SQ5 variants.
The first-generation 8R (2008–2017) uses the MLB platform shared with the B8 Audi A4, making many drivetrain components cross-compatible. The 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TDI are the volume engines; the SQ5 8R used a 3.0 TDI biturbo producing 313 hp. The second-generation FY (2017–present) moved to MLB Evo with a lighter body, updated EA888 Gen 3/4 engines, 48V mild-hybrid option, and the FY SQ5 switching to a 3.0 TFSI petrol. The FY also dropped the Multitronic CVT — which was a failure-prone option on earlier FWD diesel 8Rs — in favour of the ZF 8HP across the range.

Common Q5 Issues
The most serious Q5 fault is timing chain tensioner failure on the 8R generation 2.0 TFSI (EA888 Gen 2). Vehicles manufactured between 2009 and 2012 are most affected. The tensioner can collapse, allowing chain slack and skip, leading to catastrophic engine damage if not addressed. AdBlue and SCR system faults are the most common drivetrain complaint on FY generation 2.0 TDI models. Multitronic CVT failure on earlier FWD 8R diesel models is well-documented — slipping, juddering, or complete loss of drive indicate internal clutch pack wear.
